Mills in Lesotho and the Eastern Free State.

Mills are centres of commercial and social activity. Their physical size and their importance in local life,  gave them a grat importance in geographical terms. Their names lend themselves to the surrounding areas.

There are many mills to be visited in the Eastern Free State and in Lesotho. Here are a few.

The most outstanding story is that of Mafeteng Roller Mill. It is a fully operational roller mill, running with entirely original equipement. The mill is one of the only old   mills still operating in the country and possibly the last of its kind in Southern Africa. All the other old mills in the area have stopped operations and most have sold their machines for scrap. This has happened in some cases, in the last few months of 2005.

Mafeteng Mill  is also in danger of following this trend. Go and visit the Osborne Familly and their mill, before it is too late.
